The Bosch – Buy One Get One (Independently released CD EP, Rock)

New York quartet The Bosch made the right decision to head to Lexington, Kentucky to record this lengthy EP. Produced by Duane Lundy, Buy One Get One is a cool hard rock experience. Blasting out of the gates with the harsh and catchy “Come On Phillie,” these guys provide nine intense garage rockers played with gusto and style. The band consists of Brett Beyer, Andrew Raff, Matthew Harrison, and Holt Richardson. These guys write great songs and they play like they mean it. Buy One Get One is proof positive that The Bosch is a band to watch. Classy tracks include “Metronome,” “Back to the Laboratory,” and “Tell the Doctor.” (Rating: 5+)

Silent Uproar: THE BOSCH, “BUY ONE, GET ONE”

The Bosch is a Virginia-based [sic] quartet–simple, catchy, and oddly unsigned. The latter part of that statement puzzles me, as Buy One, Get One, from its non-descript album cover and song titles, is the ultimate feel-good record: Humorous, often silly lyrics, smart horn arrangements, and thoughtful songwriting that’s neither trite nor too vintage for modern ears, and isn’t condescending–it’s fun.

FMQB

Those are not the subway lines that the Bosch boys need to ride to get to their rehearsal space, but the name of the authority in specialty radio. In the latest FMQB Top 25 Album Chart, The Bosch debuted tied for 22 along with major artists including The Blueskins, Death Cab For Cutie, Diamond Nights, The Greenhornes, James Blunt, Metric and Various Artists (on a Tony Hawk game soundtrack.) Along with Brooklyn wünderkinds Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Bosch are one of the few unsigned artists appearing on the chart.

We wrapped up our 2005 live shows with our debut appearance at Sin-é on an icy and wet night while placing bets whether they’d be able to take the subway home from the show. Thanks to everyone who made it out to Sin-é, as well as to those who managed to get to the shows in inclement weather down in Virginia last week. I can’t remember the last time we played on a night where it wasn’t snowing, raining or both!

We are looking forward to the new year with a swanky new rehearsal space, some new songs, fun shows (starting Jan. 8 at The Mercury Lounge) and, of course, world domination hunting whales in a hovercraft!

See you in 2006!

Americana UK

Americana UK: The Bosch “But One Get One” EP (Independent 2005)

With the recent passing of the great Link Wray it’s good to see bands still relying on a riff heavy sound unafraid to bring in horns and anything else they feel will add to the stew. There’s also something about the Violent Femmes about these tracks, especially the call and response of ‘Back to the Laboratory’ as well as elements of the Cramps – you may have spotted that in ‘Zombie Killer,’ whilst ‘The Movie Director’ has a kind of harsh propulsion that reminded me of Big Chief. With the horn led party anthems ‘Matching Girlfriend’ and the brighter poppier sound of ‘Teenage Symphony’ you have the perfect 25 minutes to soundtrack the time it takes for frat party boys to get so drunk they don’t know what they are listening to.

The Deli

The Deli Magazine: Snack of the Day: The Bosch:

Imagine Brian Wilson, Dick Dale, and Joey Ramone stayed up all night taking speed pills and Ritalin. The resulting album would bear a striking resemblance to The Bosch’s latest album, Buy One Get One. The Bosch play an upbeat style of rock that combines the colorful production values of Beach Boys with surf rock energy and punk rock grit. Fast and focused, the album drives ahead at full speed, ripping through nine songs in just twenty-five minutes. The band plays so fast that tracks like ‘The Movie Director’ and ‘Napoleon Invades Russia’ are over almost before they start. The Bosch slow down long enough to enjoy the scenery on ‘Teenage Symphony’, the best and best produced song on Buy One Get One. Starting off with rolling drums, a Phil Spector wall of sound is built brick by brick, adding synthesizers, saxophones, and even sleigh bells to thicken up the sound until the song becomes a full-blown symphony. Just when it seems you’ve got The Bosch figured out, they fire off a song that defies expectation, making their album that much more rewarding in the process.

Review: The Bosch,”Buy One Get One” (Indie Release)

Think New York Dolls meets Hoodoo Gurus with flashes of Jim Carroll, Lou Reed, the White Stripes, Violent Femmes and Sha Na Na plus many more I can’t put my finger on at the moment. Extremely infectious rock n’ roll with no noticeable filler. The vocals sound a lot like the Gurus stuff. Hell, this is another one of those albums that sounds like something you’ve owned for years. You could play this and the Dead Boys side by side and neither would sound out of place. Very highly recommended!

The Bosch: Buy One, Get One

Although Buy One, Get One is not much of a departure musically from The Bosch’s debut effort, Havin’ Fun, Soundin’ Good, this second album, which, incidentally, has a few retakes from the first, is more polished and certainly more marketable with the aide of experienced and experimental producer Duane Lundy. Their signature brand of high-energy New York-style surf rock, however, remains intact.

Evil Sponge

EvilSponge: Album: Buy One Get One by The Bosch

There’s been a few changes in the Hieronymus Bosch camp since they released their rather nifty Havin’ Fun, Soundin’ Good CD last year. They’ve gained a sax player, a new bassist and lost the ‘Hieronymus’ from their name. But fans of that previous release will be pleased to know some things have stayed the same, as Buy One Get One is full of the straight-to-the-point thrills that were to be found on their debut. In fact, two tracks off Havin’ Fun, Soundin’ Good, The Movie Director and Metronome, are here again in re-jigged form. And as someone who generally prefers an original (familiar!) version to a new one, I’ve got to say that these are good re-workings which benefit from what seems like extra gusto.

Reviews of the album are starting to hit the net and print. We keep track of them here. This one from Read Magazine looks good:

It’s nice to hear a garage band doing something different. The Bosch have a full, shuffling sound with a keyboard player who also plays sax and clarinet. The horns give them a 50s rock influence, especially on a couple of hand-clapping numbers and the ballady “Teenage Symphony.” Along with rockabilly drumming, skanky upbeat horn lines, and good Lou Reed-ish rock vox, they’re raucous in a Who meets the White Light/White Heat era Velvets way, but executed with good, clean fun.
